March 28, 2012, Lansing, Michigan
On Wednesday, March 28, 2012, Women In Government and co-hosts Representative Gail Haines & Representative Lesia Liss held a Michigan State Briefing featuring information on oncology. The event took place at the Speaker’s Library in the Michigan State Capitol Building, and all women state legislators were invited to attend in addition to all legislators who sat on committees of relevance, such as the Health Policy and Insurance Committees. The briefing featured an introduction to Women In Government followed by two presentations on innovations in oncology treatment and patient access.
State policymakers have a unique opportunity to address oncology issues by raising awareness and education in their states – with the goal of providing all constituents with access to the most appropriate treatments. The first speaker, Emily Mackler, PharmD, BCOP, Clinical Pharmacist at The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, gave attendees a clinical background on oncology treatment. The second speaker, Zina Cary, National Director, State Affairs, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, spoke about patient advocacy and access.
