Access to Treatments

Biomedicals, biologics, biopharmaceuticals – whichever name they are given, these drugs and therapies are important to the lives of many people. Still, there are major roadblocks in the way of the successful and effective manufacture and patients’ application of these drugs.

Biosimilars

  • Biosimilars are biologic drugs that are made to mimic the original biomedical drugs, but differ slightly on the fundamental level. Because they are made without prior research and development, these drugs are cheaper and could therefore pose a threat to the continued development production of biomedical drugs and therapies.

Medicaid

  • Current Medicaid reimbursement structures do not account for the ongoing secondary support services for patients required of biomedical therapies as they do not discriminate between them and chemical pharmaceuticals.
