National Bone Health Alliance - 2Million2Many

The National Bone Health Alliance and inVentiv shop GSW Worldwide are launching 2Million2Many, a national education campaign designed to raise awareness of the connection between osteoporosis and broken bones. The campaign, including print ads, a microsite (2million2many.org), PSA and documentary, will urge Americans 50 and up to get follow-up testing when they break a bone.

 

The National Bone Health Campaign / Best Bones Forever!

Best Bones Forever! is a national campaign administered by the U.S. Office of Women’s Health, targeted at girls between nine and 18 years of age to encourage healthy habits for building strong bones. Information is available for parents and teachers, including free educational materials and nutrition guides, so that multiple avenues of reinforcement exist to ensure girls get enough calcium, vitamin D, and exercise to develop peak bone mass in this critical time of life.

 

Milk Matters

Milk Matters is a campaign targeting children between 11 and 15 years of age to ensure sufficient calcium intake. It is administered by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The campaign provides information and resources to encourage easy ways to get enough calcium in the diet, even for children who are lactose intolerant or not normally inclined to drink milk.


State Programs

Kentucky Adult Preventative Program

This program provides a variety of resources to encourage preventative practices for a variety of chronic diseases. These resources include an osteoporosis toolkit for community educators, which contains presentations and interactive activities targeted towards specific groups and populations to promote osteoporosis awareness and prevention.

 

New Jersey Interagency Council on Osteoporosis – Screen, Treat, Overcome, Prevent (STOP) Osteoporosis

This program provides targeted osteoporosis outreach, education, and support towards: children and adolescents; women age 25-50; early post-menopausal women; late post-menopausal women; older adults; persons with fractures; men; and patients with long-term glucocorticoid steroid use. This outreach is conducted without any financial support from the New Jersey state budget. Most funding is provided by grants from outside organizations.

 

New York State Osteoporosis Prevention Education Program (NYSOPEP)

Established by law in 1997, NYSOPEP is administered by the New York State Department of Health and provides osteoporosis education, screening, and treatment services. Six hospitals throughout the state have been designated as NYSOPEP Regional Centers, which serve as a point of access for these services. The Regional Centers also provide local education programs and coordinate osteoporosis support groups through a partnership with the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

 

West Virginia Osteoporosis and Arthritis Program

Administered by West Virginia’s Bureau for Public Health, the West Virginia Osteoporosis and Arthritis Program raises awareness of osteoporosis by educating the public and healthcare providers about prevention, detection, and treatment of the disease. The program also coordinates with existing public health programs and initiatives at the state level to achieve its goals. The program’s website provides information about osteoporosis and links to helpful resources and products tailored to at-risk populations, including specialized gardening tools to encourage physical activity and an osteoporosis-friendly cookbook to improve nutrition.
