Women In Government’s partnership with the Annie E. Casey Foundation began in 2003 when we hosted our first Family Economic Success Task Force titled Economic Empowerment for Low-Income and Working Families. Since then we have worked with the Foundation to ensure that FES issues were presented to women state legislators in diverse ways.
Since 2003, Women In Government's FES outreach has included:
- hosting conference call seminars,
- disseminating policy resources,
- featuring FES issues in our publications,
- re-convening the FES Task Force,
- highlighting FES issues on our Regional Conference agendas, and
- developing close partnerships with other organizations to strengthen our message
Women In Government has encouraged women state legislators to make FES a priority in their states, and we have been successful in identifying numerous champions across the country.
The Family Economic Success Task Force convened June 26-27, 2008, in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where 16 legislators representing 11 states participated in creating FES policy recommendations. Women in Government created two days filled with data, resources and options for state policymakers to increase the understanding of FES and its impact on our communities and states. Additionally, we gave the legislators in attendance the chance to discuss their thoughts and ideas in small groups and make recommendations on FES. Following the group discussion, ideas were synthesized and a set of Family Economic Success Task Force Policy Recommendations was issued.
