Perspectives on Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) measures the level of an individual’s kidney function and helps determine the individual’s stage of kidney disease. A physician can calculate eGFR based on the levels of blood creatinine, age, race, gender, and other factors. The following resources provide different perspectives on the calculation of eGFR in the diagnosis of kidney disease.
- The National Kidney Disease Education Program of the National Institutes of Health and the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative recommends eGFR calculations in detecting CKD in individuals. Read their "Rationale for Use and Reporting of Estimated GFR."
- The National Kidney Disease Education Program Laboratory Working Group released a special report on "Recommendations for Improving Serum Creatinine Measurement" for increased accuracy in calculating eGFR. Read the Special Report.
