The Vice Chair of Women In Government's Board of Directors, Representative Kim Rosen, hosted a State Briefing in Maine on March 24. This, the second in a series of Adult Education Briefings, featured Karen Steinberg from the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) and continued the efforts from the 2009 Adult Learning Summit.

Maine falls below the national average on many important measures including earnings after degree completion; investment in postsecondary education relative to its population 18 to 44 with a high school diploma or some college but no degree; and undergraduate credentials awarded.  With the recent economic downturn Maine's workforce is in a unique position where education is even more important to career success.  With this in mind Women In Government (WIG) is proud to have been able to present the important issues surrounding adult education to Maine State Legislators.

States were selected to host this briefing because of:

  • A strong, bi-partisan record of participation at WIG events;
  • A favorable political landscape in the legislature, such as a record of adult education legislation, or strong legislative connections with relevant stakeholders within the state;
  • A Governor who has shown an interest in adult education, workforce development, or higher education as a whole; and
  • A strong community of adult education stakeholders within the state.
