Women In Government hosted a State Briefing featuring both an introduction to the organization and expert speakers , who provided information on lupus for Indiana legislators. The February 14, 2011 event was hosted by Senator Connie Lawson and Representative Shelli VanDenburgh, and took place at the JW Marriot Hotel in Indianapolis. Women In Government President Emirtus, Susan Crosby, noted, “I love the opportunity to attend a WIG State Briefing in Indiana as this is such a special state to me and always seems to be on the cutting edge of health issues such as Lupus. I applaud Senator Lawson and Representative VanDenburgh for their efforts to educate the public on this disease”.
Chief Maggie Ginzler Robb kicked off the event and shared a letter from her sister Dr. Ellen Ginzler, a lupus expert. Following Cheif Robb's words, Dr. Marlene Aldo-Benson, a local Indiana lupus expert, gave a presentation on this acute and chronic autoimmune disease. She discussed how the immune system causes inflammation and damage to virtually every organ system in the body yet there has not been a new drug to treat Lupus in over 50 years. Lupus typically strikes young women of childbearing age, often causing complications in the mother’s health and increasing the risk of miscarriages, death or premature birth. After Dr. Aldo-Benson spoke, Jan Ferris from the Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter, gave a presentation on what state legislators can do and provided additional informational materials.
