Featuring a State Briefing on Domestic Violence

Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Pennsylvania Capitol Building, 39 East Wing

This event was hosted by Senator Tartaglione, Representative Wagner, Representative Davidson, Representative Culver, Representative Harper, & Representative Brown

Women In Government hosted a State Briefing on domestic violence that featured excellent speakers and bipartisanship from the many event hosts. The first expert presentation was from Professor Susan Sorenson, PhD, on how gun violence often plays a prevalent role in domestic violence cases. She discussed, as stated by the Journal of American Women’s Association, that “women are twice as likely to be shot and killed by intimate partners as they are to be murdered by strangers using any type of weapon.”  Also featured was CeasefirePA, which is Pennsylvania’s leading gun violence prevention organization. They work for both better enforcement of current laws against illegal gun traffickers and for stronger, commonsense handgun safety laws through education and advocacy in communities across Pennsylvania. Its co-founder and board member, Nancy Gordon, spoke on their work and distributed a letter from CeaseFirePA to the governor, a CeaseFirePA statement letter, and research on a poll of Pennsylvania voters. She also provided additional background materials on firearms restrictions that would hald remove guns from domestic violence situations.
