Women In Government welcomed Ohio female state legislators in Columbus on Tuesday, October 27, at the Ohio State Briefing and Dinner. The Briefing was hosted by Sen. Shannon Jones and Rep. Linda Bolon. WIG President Mary Brooks Beatty greeted the legislators and spoke about WIG’s work both in Ohio and nationally. To view photos from this event, click here.
Kari Sapsis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spoke flu, H1N1 and meningitis vaccines for adults. Ms. Sapsis has spent over 10 years working in public health communication and social marketing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As the Manager of CDC’s national Pre-teen Vaccine Campaign, she coordinates the formative research, message development, channel selection, materials development, partnership outreach, and media relations for the campaign. Prior to assuming the lead on this campaign, Ms. Sapsis coordinated CDC’s annual influenza vaccine campaign.
Ms. Sapsis discussed Ohio S.B. 69, which pertains to pertains to students living in on-campus housing. Ohio S.B. 69:
- Requires that students living in on-campus housing be immunized against meningococcal disease and Hepatitis B or submit a waiver
- Recommended by the Immunization Board
- The Board also recommended that any bill requiring vaccinations for college include vaccinations against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
