The Pearl of Wisdom Campaign

Women In Government (WIG) and the European Cervical Cancer Association (ECCA), alongside other organizations, are joining together to raise awareness about cervical cancer prevention. The Pearl of Wisdom™ Campaign to Prevent Cervical Cancer is a global partnership with the aim of making the Pearl of Wisdom pin the worldwide symbol for cervical cancer prevention. One of the main goals of the campaign is to motivate women to get themselves, their daughters and their mothers screened; it hopes to change the behavior of women by making them more aware of cervical cancer. Within the network of ECCA organizations, which is comprised of approximately 100 institutional members, the campaign aims to supply one unified message, giving one face to the campaign to end cervical cancer.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved new lifesaving technologies for cervical cancer prevention, including an HPV vaccine for primary prevention for girls and women age nine to 26, and advanced technologies such as the HPV test for screening women age 30 and older. Through the WIG Challenge to Eliminate Cervical Cancer Campaign, launched in 2004, all 50 states have introduced and enacted cervical cancer prevention bills and resolutions. We urge you to continue the fight against this preventable disease during January, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and talk to your constituents about new preventive technologies that will help eliminate cervical cancer.

What Women Should Know

Cervical cancer is highly preventable – screening and vaccination are key.
Cervical cancer is caused by a common virus – human papillomavirus (or "HPV").
Most women will have HPV, but few will develop cervical cancer.
Only HPV infections that persist can lead to cancer.
Every 2½ hours, a woman dies of cervical cancer in the United States, despite its being the only cancer with a single-known cause – HPV – which makes it virtually 100% preventable.
A Pap test looks for cell changes on the cervix that might lead to cancer.
Using an HPV test in conjunction with a Pap test in women over 30 can better identify women at risk for cancer.
