WIG's Newest Business Council Member
As a member of the Roche Group, Roche Diagnostics is proud to join Women In Government's Business Council. 2018 promises to be an active year for the Roche Diagnostics state government affairs team. In addition to advocating on key state issues concerning health policy, medical device manufacturer responsibility initiatives and consumer privacy, Roche Diagnostics has initiated efforts to improve sepsis awareness and policies through the introduction of evidenced based protocols that can improve the health outcomes for the over 1 million Americans who are stricken with sepsis annually.
Roche's representative who will sit on the Business Council is Jim Clark, the Senior Manager of the State Government Affairs team. Jim represents and advocates on behalf of Roche Diagnostics regarding state executive and legislative affairs. Jim serves as the primary person responsible for governmental activities in the western region of the United States, where he works to cultivate and maintain relationships with policy makers and external partners to minimize risks, as well as, maximize opportunities in advancing Roche’s policy initiatives. Jim has been a long time supporter and advocate for Women In Government and we cannot thank him enough for his continued support.
WIG Supporter Mary Hayashi
As a national healthcare leader, public affairs consultant, and former California State Assemblymember, Mary Hayashi has successfully represented business and policy leaders work through some of the most complex public policy issues. Mary first became involved with WIG in 2016 where she provided leadership in developing components of our programming at our Las Vegas conference. Mary was instrumental in bringing together a panel of experts on gaming which quickly became a hit amongst our members.
We cannot thank Mary enough for her support of WIG and we look forward to working together into the future.
WIG's Business Council Co-Vice Chairs
At the beginning of 2017, Women In Government’s (WIG) Business Council unanimously elected Tracey Meeks, Regional Director at Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Halley Hetrick, Director of State Policy at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to serve as Co-Vice Chairs.
Both Tracey and Halley have been supporters of WIG for many years. Their work with our organization has spanned the last year and a half. Vertex and WIG have combined efforts around cystic fibrosis and rare diseases with programming at our conferences and resources made available to our members on our website. In 2017, GSK and WIG worked on an initiative around the utilization of adult immunizations. This work has included six state policy roundtables in North Carolina, New York, Georgia, Washington, Indiana, and Texas and a Learning Exchange where state teams gathered to work on actions plans for their states on adult immunization policies.
Both Tracey and Halley have been tremendous champions for WIG and we cannot thank them enough for all of their support. We look forward to working long into the future with both of these incredible women.
Professional Beauty Association Supports Women with Cancer
The Professional Beauty Association - a Women In Government Business Council member that advances the professional beauty industry through education, charitable outreach, and advocacy - is a proud collaborator of the Look Good Feel Better program for cancer patients.
Established in 1989, the Look Good Feel Better program is free of charge and teaches beauty techniques to those who are experiencing appearance-related side effects from cancer treatments. Workshops are offered at hospitals and cancer centers nationwide and include techniques on skin and nail care, cosmetics, wigs and turbans, accessories and styling, all with the goal of boosting self-confidence and providing a sense of normalcy for patients undergoing strenuous medical treatments. Look Good Feel Better is open to all women experiencing cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or other forms of treatment.
The fully licensed beauty professionals who support the program are provided training and certified by the Professional Beauty Association, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. As this is a ‘train the trainer’ program, these individuals then go on to train local professionals in their own states to grow the program, and also participate in continuing education courses.
Online tutorials, a virtual makeover tool, and other resources are available on the Look Good Feel Better website, which can be accessed for free by the patients engaged with the program. Self-mailer kits including a DVD course and a 24-hour hotline also are offered for those who may not have Internet access or the ability to travel to a workshop.
Look Good Feel Better volunteers held 15,000 workshops across the United States in 2015, serving 50,000 women undergoing cancer treatments. Rachel Molepske, Director of Leadership Operations and Charitable Programs noted, “We are always looking to expand the reach to more patients. We’d love to increase the number of workshops on an as-needed basis since the ultimate goal is to reach as many patients as possible.”
These workshops are step-by-step makeover sessions led by certified beauty professionals using products donated by Personal Care Products Council member companies. Safety and sanitation are top priorities as cancer patients undergoing treatments are immuno-suppressed. Each workshop is a two hour session conducted in an intimate setting of five to ten participants and includes a 12-step skin care and makeup lesson, nail care techniques, and professional advice on how to deal with hair loss using wigs, scarves, hats, hairpieces, and other accessories.
Upon completion of the program, women are provided with take home instruction booklets and complimentary cosmetic kits in shades that match their skin tones. Kits include a variety of products demonstrated during the workshop such as cleanser, moisturizer, concealer, powder, foundation, eye shadow, eyeliner, lipstick, lip liner, blush - with each kit valued at $250 in donated product.
Molepske adds, “We’d like people to know about the program, so if you know someone, please recommend it!” There’s a program finder on the Look Good Feel Good website to help patients register for workshops.
