HistoryBeginning in Fall 2003, Women In Government initiated plans to launch a national campaign to eliminate cervical cancer. This initiative was derived from the successful introduction of the topic to state legislators at our 9th Annual State Directors’ Conference in January 2003 as well as the first HPV & Cervical Cancer Task Force Meeting in March 2003. The Campaign was named the Challenge to Eliminate Cervical Cancer and was officially launched in January 2004. Women In Government believes state policymakers have a tremendous opportunity to address cervical cancer prevention by raising awareness and education in their states – with the goal of providing all constituents with access to the most advanced and appropriate screening technologies, regardless of socioeconomic status. Since the Campaign’s launch in January 2004, all 50 states have introduced and enacted legislation aimed at the elimination of cervical cancer. The pages of this website offer background materials, articles, fact sheets, frequently asked questions, and policy recommendations around cervical cancer prevention. In August 2004, Women In Government announced the creation of the HPV and Cervical Cancer Policy Resource Center. |
