The 22nd Annual Western Regional Conference, attended by 44 legislators from across the region, featured expert speakers from a variety of industries. The conference kicked off with a talk about healthcare plans in Kansas, higher education in the Midwest, an analysis on prescription drug abuse, and the different approaches prescription drug monitoring programs are using to mitigate abuse.

The Diabetes & Obesity Summit, which was attended by over thirty female state legislators from across the country, offered a deeper dive into diabetes and obesity policy. Presenters from the American Diabetes Association and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors highlighted the rising costs of diabetes and the important role of state policy for diabetes prevention.

On April 1st, Women In Government joined North Carolina legislators in co-hosting a Capitol Forum on the Comprehensive Treatment of Obesity. The event focused on extensive treatments for obesity and included a broad array of stakeholders for expanded coverage.

On March 24th, Women In Government participated in a Capitol Forum on the Comprehensive Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension in the state of Washington. The briefing featured Senator Jeannie Darneille, Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, and Representative Eileen Cody as well as experts in the field.

A total of 30 women state legislators were in attendance. At the meeting,  Delegate Cullison reviewed over three new human trafficking bills the Women’s Caucus voted to support. The main focus of these bills is to raise awareness, for example one bill is dedicated to recognizing the human trafficking during World War II. All in attendance voted to support the bills and there were no nay votes.

On February 24th,  Women In Government held a Capitol Forum on the Comprehensive Treatment of Obesity. Ted Kyle from Conscienhealth and the Obesity Action Coalition shared a poignant presentation about erasing the stigma behind obesity.

January 13, 2015

The program swore in WIG’s 2015 Board of Directors, a bipartisan group of legislators from across the country, adding four new members to the ranks. WIG also swore in its new State Directors, women in a position of leadership that represent both chambers from state legislatures nationwide. First term legislators elected in November 2014 were invited to the conference to network and learn from veteran legislators before they jump into their first sessions.

Women In Government celebrated the launch of its updated Economic Stability and Opportunities (ESO) Toolkit by urging state and federal law makers to enact policies to help address overall income inequality and help support the financial stability of low-income, working families, individuals, and youth. The updated toolkit will include fact sheets, constituent letters, sample OpEd, social media how-to, townhall how-to, awareness and outreach activities, and many more useful resources for legislators.
